My third day in the Atlas mountains in Morocco, after I had recovered from an unpleasant bout of stomach flu, I decided to hike up to the top of the mountain with a friend in time to watch the sunset. It’s a good thing we budgeted extra time, because the hike was very difficult, especially for someone like me who is easily affected by altitude. One of my other friends even expressed great skepticism that we would even make it to the top. But make it we did, with a full bag of camera gear and a tripod. So we watched the sunset and took lots of photos.
Of course once at the top of the mountain, with the sun set, we had to climb down. And it was dark. And we weren’t sure of the way. And we had no flashlight or water. It took us hours to get down, with a few scrapes and bruises from accidents along the way, and we used the screens on our digital cameras as emergency lights (the moon didn’t rise for many hours). And we were exhausted when we finally made it back from our “hike.”
It was worth it.
